Global Sustainability Challenge is working on a revolutionary approach to re-engineer the seed and venture capital process for really important innovation and economic activity.

From a very different and large scale perspective, we seek to change how capital is raised and deployed to address the shortfall of essential investment to early stage innovate enterprise in sectors crucial to our collective well-being.

We are structured as a social commercial hybrid enterprise, with investment funds that we are raising designed to make money around the broad areas of sustainability, climate change and energy, but to do so with strong governance and a culture designed to embed values and process for what capitalism can and should be.

We are putting this into practice by forming the not for profit Get Stuff Done Foundation to have partial ownership and entitlement to a healthy chunk of the profits – all to be spent in important areas suited to not for profit activity. These include promoting environmentally focussed social enterprise, and investment reform to drive and increase sustainability throughout the economic landscape.

The world faces a perfect storm of macroeconomic challenges.  We are increasingly reliant on smaller and dynamic businesses to innovate to create growth and jobs and find solutions to the environmental challenge the world now faces.  However there is a major imbalance in how capital is invested.

Although small businesses provide over half of the global workforce and come up with over 50% of innovations, only a tiny fraction – about 0.05% – of available capital is being invested in them.  The remaining 99.95% of today’s capital is invested in high value transactions and the trading of financial products and services, stifling funding for smaller, innovative and high potential businesses.

This imbalance between early and late stage funding is now a major threat to society’s ability to respond to the challenges of the 21st century.

The funding model uses different forms of capital to align the interests of investors and beneficiaries.  The funds operate on a large scale and our approach allows assessment and selection of a wide range of high potential, investee businesses, into which GSC can make increasing, staged investments, and nurture a broad portfolio of sustainability-focused businesses from early stage to commercial and environmental success.

In recent months, a growing number of influential and progressive businesses, governments, supernational institutions, philanthropists and investors, have become engaged with these concepts.
